Matthew Grieve |
biography
Born the 14th of August in
1975, Matthew was the first of six children born to Rev.
Gordon & Judy Grieve, founding pastors at
Harvest Hills Baptist
Church in Guelph, Ontario. From his first moments in life,
Matthew found himself in church hearing some of the great
old hymns of the faith as they were sung at each service; he
would never have imagined that years later he would be
singing some of those same hymns as a gospel recording
artist?
Matthew
recalls family devotions following dinner each evening as
one of his fondest musical memories. “With my parents both
being great singers, it was always an enjoyable occasion
singing together as a family following devotions”, Matt
mentioned “We’d all find a part and sing along as best we
could”. Those songs normally heard at family devotions
promptly changed into songs sung during special music at
their own church and from there onto full concerts at
churches in Southwestern Ontario as lead singer for “The Grieve Trio”.
For
Matthew’s entire academic career, he attended
Temple
Baptist Christian Academy in Cambridge, Ontario and his love for music continued to
evolve throughout those years, until his big musical break
finally came in his first year of high school. With the
cold winter months in Ontario, Matthew and
three of his classmates would ensure they stayed warm during
their lunch break by making their way to the church
sanctuary to sing together. Tony Fischer, Ryan
Brueckner, Jonathan Limmer and Matthew Grieve formed a group
in high school that they called The Unashamed Quartet and
they quickly became a favourite in gospel music in
Canada. The Unashamed Quartet
started winning awards in Canada and became recognized for their
youthful age singing a southern gospel style of music, as
well as their tight harmonies and dynamic vocals.
They toured across Canada and parts of the United States for over ten years with Matthew
winning personal awards for Best Christian Male Vocalist in Canada
during five of those years. |

As the
quartet members grew older and lives changed with marriages
and children, Brian Dugas was added to the group as their
new tenor singer and Matt’s life would be changed forever.
Brian and he became
extremely close friends and attended church together when
they weren’t on the road touring. This friendship became a
tight bond for these two young men and in June of 2002 they
both felt the Lord calling them to leave the Unashamed
Quartet and assist a church in
London, Ontario.
It was
just a few months later where Matthew teamed up with Brian
and his wife Laura to create a group at the church to help
lead worship. This trio has since been touring for over 5
years and have released multiple recordings, and have
received numerous award nominations. But more
importantly, throughout their travels they have seen the
lives of many people come to know Christ. “When I look back
over the musical road that I have traveled” Matt said, “I
realize that the Lord’s hand of direction was on my life
that entire time. I know the Lord has a bigger plan in
store for my life. I just can’t wait to see what that plan
includes. |
